Miles H. Watkins served Kentucky Company G. Infantry 3rd Regiment and Kentucky Company I. Calvary 35th Regiment. Miles H. Watkins would have been 37 years old and married with five children in August of 1863. There are no other men named Miles H. Watkins of any age that are censused in Kentucky in 1860. It is noteworthy that Miles H. Watkins registered for the draft in 1863 with cousins Charles Watkins, Joel Watkins, and David E. Watkins all sons of James L. Watkins and near the same age as Miles H., yet none except Miles H. are known to have served in the Civil War. The implication would be that Miles H. Watkins was a Union soldier who volunteered to serve, though while researching the drafting procedures of The Civil War it is noted that men drafted could pay $300 and be exempt from serving.
